Cr Cheryl Gaedtke Press Release – 21 June 2018

Councillor Cheryl Gaedtke attends regional events with a smile and long chats
As I am typing this article, I look outside to watch the trees bending and the cold westerlies unrelenting. I can only count our blessings that the weather was much kinder over the weekend of 15th, 16th and 17th June. Our region held multiply events, from the Lowood Show occurring on Friday and Saturday in the south, to the official opening of the Hole In The Wall Café at Jimna on Sunday in the north. The beautiful and well-equipped Kilcoy Information Centre’s theatre was the venue to watch “Guardians of the Galaxy (Vol.2)” on Friday night, and the concert “Wonder in Aliceland” provided by the talented Toogoolawah High School students, teachers and helpers was held in the Alexandra Hall. For the third time running, the Esk Garden & Lifestyle Fair was completely buzzing with great plants, food, entertainment and specials. There were many buses of happy guests and customers wearing huge grins. There was also a practice Park Run at Cormorant Bay and the Kilcoy Motorcross Club had a very successful practice day over the weekend.
The crazy bunch from the Moore Soldiers Memorial Hall held their Moore Hall Markets with a twist, on Saturday – it was a Pajama Party, and by the looks of the photos everyone had a completely fun time not having to change from their PJ’s prior to visiting the morning winter markets. The Kilcoy Cup which was also held on Saturday recorded a huge number of spectators who were totally caught up with all the thoroughbred racing, harness racing and fashions of the field. I received a call from Pauline Watson from Vernor near Fernvale advising that she was ecstatic due to the fact that after holding her third Biggest Morning Tea to help beat cancer, she raised $2085.20 on Sunday.
Somerset Regional Council is an undivided council comprising seven Councillors (including our Mayor) so if you would like us to come along to your event, please email every Councillor with an invitation. With over 5,000 square kilometres and so many events it can be difficult at times to keep up with all that is happening in our wonderful region.

COUNCIL OF MAYORS (SEQ) – MEDIA RELEASE

Mayors welcome Premier’s support for SEQ Olympic investigation

31 May 2018

The Council of Mayors (SEQ) has welcomed Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s interest in a feasibility study being conducted by the group which will investigate a potential 2032 Olympic Games bid for South East Queensland.

Speaking today from Tokyo as part of a trade mission to Japan and the United States, the Premier acknowledged that the modern Olympic Games is changing and was keen to explore whether South East Queensland could still deliver a successful Games through a cost effective and scaled-down approach.

Eight South East Queensland councils are currently funding and participating in an Olympic feasibility study which will investigate whether a regional Olympic Games bid could be a catalyst for infrastructure and transport investment, boost the economy and raise the region’s international profile.

Council of Mayors (SEQ) Chair Cr Graham Quirk said the Mayors had embarked on their Olympic investigations based on the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) commitment to reform the bidding process, and believed that the region had enough existing facilities to mount an affordable Olympic Games bid.

“The Council of Mayors (SEQ) began investigating a South East Queensland Olympic Games bid in 2015, first through a pre-feasibility study and now with a complete feasibility and transport analysis,” he said.

“This is something we have been exploring thoroughly and we certainly welcome the Premier’s interest in our work.

“Through a regional bid, we have the opportunity to share the load of an Olympic Games across South East Queensland – using our many existing venues and temporary facilities to keep costs to a minimum and ensuring the maximum benefit is returned to the region.

“A survey of South East Queenslanders in 2016 showed that 62 per cent of people supported a possible Olympic bid and the ongoing support of the people is an essential ingredient.

“We believe the IOC would welcome an innovative and affordable Olympic Games model and that South East Queensland is an ideal location to demonstrate how this can be achieved. Ultimately, we would only endorse a bid that could demonstrate a strong benefit and lasting legacy for South East Queensland.”

The Council of Mayors (SEQ) released its pre-feasibility study into a South East Queensland Olympic Games in 2016, and is now delivering a transport and feasibility study for a potential 2032 Olympic Games bid for release later this year.

The IOC is currently reforming the Olympic Games bidding process to introduce a more cost effective model and work closely with potential hosts before committing to a formal bid.

A South East Queensland Olympic Games bid has already received in-principle support from the Australian Olympic Committee.

Somerset Art Society

Hello everybody,
NEWS AROUND TOWN

• FERNVALE ARTIST’S EXHIBITION: The
Fernvale Artists exhibition celebrating Banjo
Paterson was a huge success. Each artist did a
painting themed on a line or title of a Banjo poem.
The official opening was on Saturday 6th may at
2pm in the Old Fernvale Uniting Church. There was
a good turn out at the opening and lots of delicious
food and drinks. There was even poetry reading!

• ESK SHOW: Thank-you to all of you who participated
by putting an artwork, or sculpture in the Esk Show. There
were a lot of fantastic entries of really high quality.
Several SASI members took out prizes in a variety of
categories, including Ethan Taylor (Linda Taylor’s son)
who took out the championship prize for his age group.

• ESK GARDEN AND LIFESTYLE FAIR: Just a
reminder that this is on in Pipeliner Park, Esk on 16th
June from 8am-3pm. SASI has a stall and needs artworks
of any medium or style that has a garden, plant, flower,
fruit or vegetable theme. Bring your work along to the SASI stall with your name
and price attached. You also need to have a list of your artworks and their prices so
we can track all of your sales. There is no commission, but it would be appreciated
if you could spend a little time helping at the stall. If you would like to demonstrate
doing a painting or helping on the day please contact Kim Thomson at
secretary.sasiart@gmail.com

SASI is a vibrant group of diverse artists who support the arts in the Somerset Region of South
East Queensland. We encourage artists to promote and showcase their work and come together
to share knowledge and ideas. We have workshops, art focused trips and other events throughout
the year.

• SASI GROUP EXHIBITION AT GLEN ROCK GALLERY: So far we have had
13 people with two paintings each contact us wanting to exhibit in SASI’s group
exhibition at Glen Rock Gallery in Esk Visitor Information centre. Thank-you to
those of you who have applied. We have room for a couple more members but you
need to contact us ASAP . The exhibition will be like a smorgasbord of artworks
being produced in the Somerset Region. The artworks will be hung on the 28th

by Lynette Hughes and will be ready for viewing on
the afternoon of 31st May 2018.
Lynette is a visual artist living in Mount Beppo,
QLD. This body of work is a reflection of Lynette’s
life with paintings ranging from self portraits to
abstract images capturing her emotions and
experiences. The images evolve in a dynamic and
challenging way.

• NEXT GENERAL MEETING: We apologise to those who turned up at Glen
Rock Gallery for the advertised meeting in May. We are sorry for not
communicating the change in date. This was an oversight. The next general
meeting is the 22nd June 2018 at 5:30pm Glen Rock Gallery. Hope to see you
there – please come along!

OUTGOING PRESIDENT’S NOTES
I wish to inform the committee members and fellow SASI members that I have been
replaced as Club President by Nelle Smith. I have full confidence that Nelle will have
time to devote to the club. I am not able to give any time to SASI due to a family
crisis – for me my family will always come first. My 10 year old son has gone through
a traumatic experience at school, which means I am with him everyday at his new
school. This is a very important part of his rehabilitation. I am glad that someone has
stepped forward to take over the reins and wish Nelle all the best in the running of
SASI. I will still remain an active member and hopefully might be able to make it to
some of the social days. Now that my replacement has been found I submit my
resignation. SASI will still remain an important part of my life, but just as a member. I
would like to say thank you to Kim for all the help she has given to me.
Regards,
Linda Taylor

Cr Cheryl Gaedtke – Press Release – 17 May 2018

Cr Gaedtke is here to help

It is a Councillor’s role to assist their constituents with various issues, and to offer sound advice relative to their Local Government role.  However, often I receive complaints from our residents that I cannot immediately deal with, because the resident is not aware that there is a process in place that applies to everyone.

Consequently, is all about “Help Us Help You”.  Council has a system in place where residents can lodge a Customer Service Request (CSR) to report an area of concern or make a request for service or assistance.  Our friendly customer service team can lodge a CSR on your behalf.  It is as easy as one, two, three!

One – phone, email or write to Council and ask to lodge a Customer Service Request

Two – explain the nature of your request and location

Three – Request a CSR reference number if you wish to monitor the status of your enquiry.

Need further information, jump on council’s website, and to Contact Us and then Customer Service Requests.  Once you read all the information, I am sure you will agree – It is as easy as one, two, three!

Condition of council roads is by far the most received complaint.  With such a large road network, there are many policies and levels of intervention that apply.   There is also a strategic categorization of roads to assist with the urgency of requests.

Complaints about animal control, and in particular control of dogs is another common complaint.  It is imperative that all information is offered directly to Council, so that all relevant information is available to the responsible Council Officer.

I am more than happy to help wherever possible, however we need to adhere to the Customer Service Request procedure.  We are definitely here to help.

President’s report, by Iris Wessling, March 2018
I must begin with a big thank you to Michael, our Vice President, who has deputised for me willingly and efficiently, on many occasions over the past 12 months.
Thank you to Col for your work as Secretary – often doing so much behind the scenes. Thank you for your work on our communication with the Justice Dept.
Thank you to Noela for her dedication to all aspects of the work of the Historical Society. You are our Researcher Extraordinaire and our reference source for so much of the work of the Society.
Thank you, Jenny, for taking our minutes and reporting them so efficiently.
Greg, our finances have been in very safe hands with you. Thank you for your attention to detail and the speed and efficiency with which you carry out the role of Treasurer.
And – a big thank you to the members who generously give of their time to come each week to open the Hall. We are truly indebted to you. Also, the various typists including Maxine, Bev, Jenny, and Karen and Di who have left, keep up the computerised data entries and Carmel expertly collates in various fields.
Lastly and by no means least thank you to the band of members who regularly attend monthly meetings and ensure that the Society continues to operate smoothly.
I will now list some memories of the past year of KDHS. These are in no particular order.
1) History Trail signs can now be seen all over the business area of town as well as at a growing number of residences. The original funding for these signs (from the now defunct Wood, Wine and Art Festival) has all been used and the Society has continued erecting the signs at its own expense. Sales of laminated copies of these signs continues and contributes in a small way to our costs. We remain indebted to Noela for her considerable talent and time devoted to this project. Thank you too to Michael and Greg for collection (from Woodford) and erection of these signs, with Ian at times.
2) Communication from the Hospital about a proposed Historical Display on their premises was received. Work on this is ongoing and the Society will continue to offer support where needed.
3) Somerset Regional Council requested the Society’s help to compile a list (with recommendations) of possible names for future local streets and roads. This list has been supplied and the first of these names has been used – for Grehan Lane adjacent to the United Service Station.
4) The Society participated in three Street Carnivals in Kilcoy during 2017. The BBQ and Beer Festival in September, the RSL Fun Day in October and the Lions’ Christmas Carnival in December. By far the most successful financially for us was the BBQ and Beer Festival. Thank you to the Kilcoy Art Society for inviting us to share sites at these events.
5) In August, Kilcoy State School celebrated 125 years of provision of education to the children of Kilcoy. As President of KDHS, I was privileged to be invited to address the gathering. A book giving a pictorial history of the latest 25 years of the school’s history was launched that day. We support and encourage the school in its endeavours to preserve the history of the school and to continue recording the stories of its students.
6) Locals and visitors who pass along Hope Street, past Yowie Park, are now left in no doubt about the purpose of the Hall and the neighbouring Craft Cottage at the western end of the park. In late 2017 the roof signs were erected to ensure visitors were aware of the use of these two veteran buildings.
7) 2017 was the year when the Hall of History and Yowie Park featured in a Japanese Television documentary about Australia. The Society was happy to liaise with the film makers about the story of the Yowie.
8) John and Lynn McAulay represented the Society and chatted with the younger students of Kilcoy State School about early Kilcoy history.
However, undoubtedly the biggest project yet undertaken in its almost 20-year history by the Society, is the expansion of our presence in Yowie Park in the form of a Museum to be constructed alongside a soundstage. Planning for this is a long-term project – in conjunction with the Kilcoy District Progress Alliance.
Just 12 months ago, a Business Plan for this project was being completed as a requirement of Somerset Regional Council. Twelve months later, an application for a Community Grant to cover the costs of an Application for, and preparation of, a Material Change of Use for the required area of Yowie Park has just been lodged – a further requirement of the SRC. There is still a long road to travel before we reach the hands-on construction of this exciting addition to Yowie Park.
On behalf of the members of the Society, I must acknowledge the work of Ian Badman in progressing this project. Ian has worked in conjunction with David Matthews of the Kilcoy District Progress Alliance. David has attended KDHS meetings and addressed us on several occasions to explain the intricacies of this journey. We thank David for the many hours he has spent working on our behalf.
In conclusion, thank you for the support I have received over the past 12 months and may the Society have a successful year as we move towards our twentieth birthday in November.
Ian’s Report: Proposed extension to Hall of History for a Museum
Slowly but surely the Society is progressing towards the day when we can extend our Hall of History to create more space for displays, storage and a work area. Somerset Regional Council requires that we work with the Kilcoy Progress Alliance to jointly submit a Development application for the change of use of the land in question. Architects have provided professional drawings of our proposed museum that have been invaluable in the approval process. These plans can be viewed at the Hall of History. Council can see that what we propose will be aesthetically pleasing and an asset to our Society, our park and our town. Once the Development application is approved it will mean that we have Council’s blessing to go ahead and seek funding.

The Historical Society promotes local history and provides historical information. Many photos of Kilcoy in days past are on display and in their records, along with a multitude of written memoirs, history and documents. You may wish to visit and research local history or your ancestral history. The Society is always on the lookout for volunteers to man the Hall of History, so that it can continue to be open to serve the public. Our aim is to record, preserve, promote and share our local history. Please call us with any material that we could use or keep in our growing files at the Hall of History.
Photographic collection
Our huge photographic collection is in the process of being re-catalogued, and there may be times when we put out a call for the borrowing of photos previously lent to us, so that we can re-copy them now with more advanced equipment. This will ensure that our collection is as professional as possible. Copies of any photos required for family research are available for purchase, costs ranging from $5 to $8, depending on size, plus postage.
Bits ‘n Pieces Books
Additional data has been progressively filed on computer and printed out in books (50 compiled so far) labelled “Bits ‘n Pieces”, so that they can be perused by anyone carrying out private research or just visiting at our Hall of History. We are very appreciative of the role our new volunteer typists have taken on – Maxine and Bev – who are helping with computerising our ongoing research.
Cemetery Records: is a service provided by the Society. Anyone with similar interests in any aspect of family or local history and becoming a Society member is most welcome to join in.

Regional Shows and Show Balls get underway in Somerset

Our region has a mix of local shows and show balls, with Kilcoy’s already done and dusted.  The weather was perfect at the Kilcoy Show held on 6th and 7th April, and with recent rains the weather lead up to our shows has been kind indeed.  After holding the position of Vice President and committee member with the Kilcoy Show Society many years ago, I understand the amount of work that is generously provided by numerous volunteers to bring the local show and show ball to fruition.

Kilcoy Show Society is one of fifteen show societies affiliated with the Near North Coast Sub Chamber.  Our other local show societies, Lowood, Esk and Toogoolawah are affiliated with the West Moreton and Brisbane Valley Sub Chamber comprising of a total of ten show societies.  As Councillor, I would prefer to see all of our show societies working under the one banner, but this is not a unique arrangement as prior to council amalgamation, Kilcoy and Esk Shire Councils shared different boundaries for many bodies.  I must congratulate Mrs Estelle Drynan and acknowledge her hard work as President of the West Moreton and Brisbane Valley Sub Chamber.

The finals of the Near North Coast Sub Chamber Miss Showgirl will be held at Kilcoy on 30th June.  The finals of the West Moreton and Brisbane Valley Sub Chamber Miss Showgirl and Rural Ambassador will be held at Esk on 14th July.  Our local show societies must be excited and honoured to be holding such important events.

Husband John and I proudly support our local show by sponsoring events.  So now is the time to find your dancing shoes and your favourite pair of jeans and get to your local show ball and show.  Please call in to the council stand and have a chat, as I look forward to catching up with you at each of our local shows.

Esk Show Ball – 19 May, Esk Show – 25/26 May.  Lowood Show Ball – 26 May, Lowood Show – 15/16 June.  Toogoolawah Show Ball – 2 June, Toogoolawah Show – 8/9 June.

Kilcoy Show President Chris Anderson, Hannah Goode and Dad Geoff
