Cr Cheryl Gaedtke – Ordinary Meeting 25 August 2021

Agenda Item # 5 Matters of Public Interest.

I am relieved to learn that the plight of young homeowners building their dream home in Kilcoy has resulted in a very sensible and fair outcome.  With the assistance of the Water Ombudsman, Deb Frecklington MP and Somerset Regional Council,  exorbitant water infrastructure connection fees have been waived.

I encourage residents to be aware of forthcoming council events and attend where possible:

  • The Long Drive for Drought Landcruiser Convoy – Yowie Park – 27 August
  • Linville/Moore Flood Study Community Consultation – 30 August
  • Business Networking Evening – Linville – 2 September
  • Farmers Big Night Out – Esk – 8 September
  • Somerset Arts Network “Growing the Arts” – Esk – 28 September

Gerald Youles, the very modest World Champion Axeman, Kilcoy PA & I Rural Ambassador, Somerset Region Australia Day Sports Award 2020 and Master Axe Grinder and a young 26 year old, was voted out from the television show “Australian Survivor” this week.

Great news, from 1 September 2021 Queensland businesses can no longer supply single use plastic straws and stirrers, single use plastic cutlery, single use plastic bowls and plates, and expanded polystyrene takeaway food containers and cups.

I am astonished at the standard of the two RADF Applications assessed by the committee.  The arts and creative alliance in our region continue to grow and is shaping into a proud presence.

The Brisbane-Valley Kilcoy Landcare Assn Inc has been successful in accomplishing a Landcare Led  Bushfire Recovery Grant of $40,000.  The grant will cover the costs to hold two Landcare Festivals in areas that were badly affected by the Black Summer Bushfires in 2019.  Sincere thanks to Roger Kitson  (Community Development Officer – Bushfire Recovery and Resilience) for his leadership and support with the application process.

Somerset Art Society Inc. (SASI) held its Annual General Meeting, where the outgoing committee members were offered a vote of thanks, before the incoming nominations for President and Secretary was accepted.  Unfortunately, SASI is still searching for a Treasurer, this position is supported by the availability of all finances being held on a computer which is made available to the position.  If you or someone you know is interested in taking this important position on, please contact the group.

I believe in open communication, active listening and a commonsense approach, ALWAYS!
After 39 years, 31 as staff and 2 terms as Councillor, I have enjoyed my journey and understand the importance of Local Government as the grass root level of government.

George & Sarah Adsett moved to their Mt Kilcoy selection, Glenelg, in 1904.George served two terms as a Kilcoy Shire Councillor (1924-1930). George was also Chair and committee member of the Mt Kilcoy State School Building Committee formed on 20th February 1908. Having eight children, George was part of the community who understood the need for a school at Mt Kilcoy. The building of the school was approved on 15th April 1908 at a cost of 205 pounds, the building was completed by 21st December. The school officially opened on the 18th January 1909. In 1909, Minnie, Aaron and Arthur Adsett, along with twenty-five other children commenced their schooling at Mt Kilcoy. In recognition of the achievements of the Building Committee and Great Grandfather Adsett's involvement some 120 years ago, I proudly presented the "George Adsett" Sporting Cup to the Mt Kilcoy State School winning sports house for 2024. ... Great work!🎖️ On this day 106 years ago, the guns fell silent on Europe’s Western Front. Four brutal years claimed an estimated 16 million lives, including 60,000 Australians. Another 156,000 Diggers were wounded, gassed or imprisoned; leaving lifelong, sometimes intergenerational, physical and mental scars. On Remembrance Day, we honour those who have served and suffered in all conflicts, and today's commemoration in the small country town of Kilcoy was particularly special. Kilcoy's original war memorial pre-dated modern-day infrastructure, and the memorial was positioned in a tricky spot when it came to upgrading essential services to support the community's growth. In what’s been a fantastic joint effort between our teams, Kilcoy RSL and Somerset Regional Council, a beautiful, updated memorial has been dedicated on a hill overlooking the region from which so many Diggers gave their all. Remembrance Day and respect for veterans runs deep at Ergon and Energex – many of our own people have served, so it was particularly special to have some of them at Kilcoy today to remember the fallen at the first commemoration held at the new war memorial site. Our thanks to Kilcoy RSL and the community for welcoming us today, and our endless gratitude to all who have served our country. #lestweforget #RemembranceDay2024📷 Our own Rick Madden, Chris Graham and Michael Hayes with ex-serviceman and Caboolture depot stalwart Chris Kliese, Energex’s Gary McMillan and Amy Tasker, and Kilcoy RSL’s Dan Tones & sub-branch president Shane Williams at today's commemoration. ...
